UFC planning 2012 event in Seattle

CALGARY – UFC fans in the Pacific Northwest, rejoice. The octagon will soon make a return trip to the region.

UFC president Dana White today revealed the promotion is currently planning on bringing an event to Seattle before year’s end.

“I know we’re going to Seattle this year,” White said. “I can’t remember the date.”

White said he wasn’t sure whether or not the proposed event is expected to serve as a pay-per-view event or a “Fight Night” caliber card, as it was the first time the promotion visited the city in March 2011. That event, “UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis” drew an impressive 13,741 fans and a $1,182,850 live gate to the city’s KeyArena at Seattle Center. Both figures remain records for UFC Fight Night events in the U.S.

The UFC returned to the Pacific Northwest in June 2011 for “UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin,” which served as the second of two UFC events in Vancouver during a two-year trial period for MMA in the city. However, Vancouver is not currently a viable option for the promotion until British Columbia establishes provincial-wide MMA regulation. A bill designed to address that issue was introduced to the British Columbia legislature this past May.

Until then, Vancouver’s loss will remain Seattle’s gain.

“Of course we want to go back to Vancouver,” White said. “We would like to, but it looks like we’ll be hitting Seattle a few times before we go back to Vancouver.”
